Curriculum
West Parish Family School staff use a play based curriculum. We believe that children learn best in small groups and through “active learning” Children are not required to sit for long periods of time or to use work sheets. The curriculum begins at the toddler level and builds in complexity through Pre K.
Our teachers design monthly units and themes using a variety of resources. Everything that we do is based on the Massachusetts Guidelines & Frameworks for Learning.
The state designed Preschool Learning Experiences based on six areas of learning:
- English Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science, Technology, Engineering
- History & Social Science
- Health Education
- The Arts
The Toddler Learning Experiences are based on the following areas:
- Social Emotional Development
- Cognitive Development
- Language & Communication
- Physical Health & Well Being
Beyond the state guidelines we use the Creative Curriculum. In Preschool and Pre K we also use the High Scope approach to Literacy and Math.
We emphasize social skills such as sharing, taking turns, expressing our feelings and recognizing the feelings of others. We gradually learn to sit in circle and wait for our turn. (as we develop Emotional Intelligence, our natural intelligence can be more easily nurtured) When it comes time for Kindergarten our children will be more than ready socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually.
