School History

The West Parish Meetinghouse was built in 1717 to serve the needs of a growing Barnstable community.  More than 250 years later, West Parish Family School was founded as a nonprofit outreach program for the children of that community. Through the dedicated work of volunteers from the church and parents, the Gilman House was built to accommodate the needs of the school, which opened in 1976.

With it's mission to provide a non-sectarian, early childhood education regardless of race, religion, ethnic or economic background, the West Parish Family School soon became a respected and treasured institution in the community.

Five years ago the school began a physical upgrading program that included remodeling the classrooms, upgrading the playground facilities, installing a new parking lot and, most importantly, installing a security system to insure the safety of the children.

Our goal is to provide a nurturing, inclusive, diverse education for toddlers, pre-school, and pre-kindergarten children. We provide options in Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten for two- and three-day schedules as well as early and late care.
We are proud that this heritage now serves over 100 children.

Keeping the school academically current was recently confirmed by the achievement of the prestigious certification by NAEYC (the National Association For The Education of Young People).

This award took significant effort on the part of the staff and continues to keep the academic quality of West Parish  in the forefront.

The West Parish Family School is managed by a Board of Directors which includes Church members as well as parents of the children in the school. In appreciation and gratitude for the dedication to create, fund, and build the West Parish Family School we salute the following individuals and families:
